Month Theme: Reaping in the Jubilee

Topic: Feeding the Hungry

Scripture Reading: Luke 4:16-21

Main Text:
Luke 4:19
To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

In God’s chosen fast, the sabbath and Jubilee, the Israelites were commanded to share their food with the poor (Isaiah 58:5-7). Caring for the poor marked sanctifying the Jubilee. The hungry are those who cannot feed themselves. The hungry are weak and sick. Sometimes, they die.

It is an act of righteousness to share our food with the poor during the Jubilee. WHAT we give to hungry and WHEN we feed them are important. But HOW we feed them is crucial – we must feed the hungry and maintain their dignity at the same time. Most of the hungry already carry a feeling of shame and low self-esteem. We should not make it worse by being disrespectful when feeding them.

Boaz showed great kindness and honour towards Ruth and directed his reapers to intentionally leave some of the harvest for her to glean (Ruth 2:14-16). This act of righteousness might have given him the favour to marry Ruth and become part of the genealogy of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Ask God to use you as a solution to poverty around you.
